Mingle vs Translator Earbuds
Dedicated translator earbuds, such as Timekettle's, cost $129 to $449 and are built for hands-free conversation, with some offline languages. Mingle runs in a browser and uses the phone and earbuds you already own. The earbuds do more on their own; Mingle costs nothing extra to try.

Choose Translator Earbuds if…
- You need your translation in your ear and your reply spoken aloud from the phone at the same time. Timekettle's Speaker mode splits the audio that way; Mingle plays all read-aloud through one output.
- You need translation with no internet. Timekettle's M3 lists 13 offline language packs; Mingle needs a connection.
- You want hands-free use for hours, or a mode where each person wears one earbud and taps to talk, like Timekettle's Touch mode.
Choose Mingle if…
- You do not want to buy hardware. Mingle works with any wired or Bluetooth earbuds your phone already uses, or with no earbuds at all.
- The conversation is unplanned: a guest at a desk, a customer at a counter, a neighbour at the door. Mingle is a web page, with no pairing and no app to install.
- You need a language the earbuds do not cover. Mingle lists 60+ languages; Timekettle's M3 lists 43, and its W4 range 52.

What the earbuds do that Mingle does not
Translator earbuds are built for a conversation where you keep your hands free. Timekettle's M3 has three modes: Touch mode, where each person wears one earbud and taps to talk; Listening mode, for following someone speaking; and Speaker mode, where the other person speaks to your phone, you hear the translation in your earbud, and your reply is spoken aloud from the phone. That split, private in one direction and aloud in the other, is something Mingle cannot do: its read-aloud goes to whichever output the phone uses, so with earbuds connected you hear both sides and the other person reads the screen. The M3 also lists 13 offline language packs, and Mingle needs an internet connection.

What Mingle does with the earbuds you already own
Mingle is a web page. Put the phone on the table facing the other person, choose the phone's built-in microphone under Devices, and turn on Read aloud: their words are translated into your language and played in whatever earbuds your phone is using. There is nothing to pair, charge or install, and it works the same on Android and iPhone. A session translates in one direction at a time; to reply, swap the languages from the session menu. With your earbuds in, the other person then reads your translation on the screen, or you take the earbuds out and use the speaker.

Cost, and who each one suits
On Timekettle's US store in September 2026, list prices ran from $129 for LiveTalk and $149.99 for the M3 to $349 for the W4, $399 for the W4 Plus and $449 for the W4 Pro, with frequent discounts. Mingle is free to try as a guest, with paid plans from $4. If you translate daily, need offline languages, or need your reply spoken aloud while you listen privately, the earbuds earn their price. If translation needs are occasional, unplanned or shared with people you cannot equip, start with the phone you have.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Mingle vs Translator Earbuds.
Will Mingle work with my AirPods or Galaxy Buds?
It should. Read-aloud plays through your phone's normal audio output, so whatever earbuds your phone is using will receive it. We have not tested every model. When earbuds are connected, choose the phone's built-in microphone under Devices so it picks up the other person rather than you.
Are translator earbuds better in noisy environments?
They can be. Earbud microphones sit close to the wearer's mouth, which helps pick up the wearer's own voice. In a Mingle session the phone's microphone has to hear the other person, so move closer and away from noise. We have not run side-by-side noise tests.
Do translator earbuds work without internet?
Some do, for a limited set of languages. Timekettle lists 13 offline language packs for the M3. Mingle needs an internet connection.
Can my customer follow the translation on their own phone?
Yes. Tap Share session and let them scan the QR code: they join in their own browser, choose their language, and you both speak freely, with nothing to buy and no account for them. You need a free account to share. On a single shared phone, they read the screen or listen to the speaker instead.
Does Mingle work on Android?
Yes — Mingle runs in any modern browser on Android, iOS, and desktop. No app download required for either person.
Is Mingle free to try?
Yes — open a guest session instantly in your browser with no card and no install. Guest sessions are short, enough to try it out; paid plans add longer sessions and saved history.
