Read aloud

Chinese-speaking visitors are among the largest groups arriving in Thailand, and most of what they do there depends on being understood in Thai within a few seconds: a hotel desk in Pattaya, a Grab driver who has missed the turn, a tour desk in Phuket handing over a pickup time, a clinic booking in Chiang Mai. Mingle takes your spoken Mandarin and turns it into Thai captions and a Thai voice, live, in the browser on any phone or computer. Nothing is installed, and a guest session starts without an account or a card.

Perfect for real conversations

A session runs one way, Chinese into Thai. When the Thai speaker answers, open the session menu, use the swap, and tap the mic again: the current session ends, the captions clear, and a new session starts in the opposite direction, so their reply arrives in Chinese for you to read or hear. One phone placed on the counter between two people is enough. If you are signed in, you can also share the session so a travel companion or a colleague joins from their own phone.

  • The Phuket hotel desk and the late taxi

You arrive after midnight and explain in Mandarin that the room you booked has no air conditioning working, and that you also need a ride to the airport at six. The receptionist reads Thai captions and hears Thai from the speaker. When she answers with a price for the taxi, swap to a Thai-to-Chinese session so the baht figure reaches you as Chinese text before you nod.

  • The Chiang Mai night market

You ask a stallholder in Mandarin whether the scarf is silk, and what the price is for three. His Thai answer may quote the bundle price in tens and hundreds of baht, so swap the session and read it in Chinese before you hand over a banknote.

  • The factory visit outside Bangkok

A buyer from Guangdong walks the line with the plant supervisor. Questions about shift patterns, defect rates and loading dates go out in Mandarin; the supervisor reads the Thai on the shared phone and answers aloud. Each answer is read back after a swap, so the dates and quantities are confirmed in text on both sides.

  • Native Script Captions

Thai captions render in ไทย, not a romanized guess.

  • Conversational Speed

Keeps up with natural real-world dialogue.

  • Read-Aloud Support

Hear Thai naturally when you need to.

The earbud moment: they talk to your phone, you hear your language

Set your phone on the table facing them and turn on Read aloud. Their voice goes into your phone’s mic; the translation plays quietly in your earbuds. Private, hands-free, no shouting into a gadget.

Any wired or Bluetooth earbuds your phone uses should work, because read-aloud plays through the phone’s normal audio output. If your phone switches to the earbuds’ microphone, choose the built-in mic under Devices so it hears them, not you.

Want them to hear you too? Tap Share session and show them the QR code: they join on their own phone in their own language, so each of you reads and hears the other without passing anything back and forth. On one phone, swap the languages from the session menu to reply instead.

What makes Thai different

Thai has five tones, and a syllable with the wrong tone can become a different word, so a halting attempt at a Thai word can land as a different word entirely. Speaking in Mandarin and letting the translation supply the Thai spares you that risk. Thai does not conjugate verbs or add plural endings, and it uses classifiers for counting, so a Mandarin speaker will find the structure less foreign than the script. One difference is the order inside a noun phrase: the Thai adjective follows the noun. Another is that politeness is carried by closing particles. ครับ is used by men and ค่ะ by women (with คะ for questions), and these endings often show up even in a plain yes. A particle may also only mean that the listener is following, not that they agree.

Mingle does not let you select your gender or a politeness level, so treat the Thai caption as the thing to read, not to trust blindly. A woman may therefore hear a ครับ, or a man a ค่ะ; if that matters, a quick gesture towards the phone shows the other person that it speaks for you. Numbers also need a second look. Thai uses its own digits (๐ ๑ ๒ ๓) on some official papers, shop receipts and notices, and many documents give the year in the Buddhist Era, which is 543 years ahead of the calendar you know. Thai counting also has words for ten thousand (หมื่น) and a hundred thousand (แสน), which feels familiar to a speaker of Mandarin, but spoken prices in markets are usually small and quick. Confirm every baht figure on the caption before you pay.

This page covers Chinese → Thai specifically

The practical difficulty for a Mandarin speaker is not Thai grammar but everything around it. Thai is written in its own script, with no spaces between words, so a Thai caption looks like an unbroken ribbon to anyone who has not studied it. You will not be able to check it by eye. What works in your favour is that the person across from you can: they read the Thai line, hear it spoken through the speaker, and answer. If you use an earbud for read-aloud on the return direction, you hear the Thai person's answer as Mandarin without turning the phone around.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Chinese to Thai translation.

Will the Thai say ครับ or ค่ะ for me?

Thai politeness endings depend on the speaker's gender: ครับ for a man, ค่ะ for a woman. Mingle does not ask for your gender, so the Thai may carry an ending that does not match you, or none at all. Look at the Thai caption on screen; if it matters, tell the other person with a gesture or a short note that the phone speaks for you, so a mismatched ending is understood as the tool talking.

I cannot read Thai. How do I know what was said to the other person?

You cannot proofread the Thai caption, so keep each sentence short and carry one idea at a time. The reply is the check: swap to a Thai-to-Chinese session and read what they answered in Chinese. If the answer does not fit your question, say it again in simpler words.

Do prices and dates come out in Thai numerals?

Do not assume either form. Thai documents can use Thai digits and Buddhist Era years, which run 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, so 2026 is 2569. Read the figure on the caption and confirm the amount or date with the other person before you pay or sign.

Does Mingle work without an account or an app on my phone?

Yes. Open mingle.fit in your phone browser, allow the microphone, and start. Guest sessions need no account or card; signing in adds saved history, which helps when you want to look back at a quoted price or an appointment time.

Does it need a data connection, and what if the hotel Wi-Fi drops?

Mingle needs an internet connection and has no offline mode. If the connection drops mid-session, restore it and tap the mic again; for a longer exchange such as a clinic visit, check your signal before you begin.

Do both people need the app?

No. Everything runs in the browser. For a conversation both ways, tap Share session and show the QR code: they join on their own phone in their language, with no app and no account. On one shared phone, a session translates one direction, and you swap the languages from the session menu when they reply.

Is Mingle free to try for this language pair?

Yes — start instantly with free guest sessions, no card and no install. Paid plans unlock longer sessions and saved history.
