Live Translation for Hotel Front Desks & Hospitality

It is 11:40 PM and the lobby is quiet. A family of four pushes through the revolving door with three large suitcases and the unmistakable posture of people who have been traveling for sixteen hours. The father steps to the desk and begins speaking in Arabic, quickly, with gestures toward his phone and then toward the elevator bank. The night agent, working alone, does not speak Arabic. The family does not speak English beyond 'room' and 'problem.' There is a booking reference on a screen somewhere, but what the father is saying is not about the booking. It is about his youngest daughter, who is running a fever, and whether there is a pharmacy nearby that is still open. Without a way to understand him, the agent can only smile and gesture helplessly. With Mingle open on the desk tablet, the conversation takes thirty seconds to resolve: two pharmacies within walking distance, one open until midnight.

How front desks handle this today

  • ✗Call the bilingual night manager at home, interrupting their sleep for what may turn out to be a simple question.
  • ✗Try to mime the request or type single words into a phone app while the guest watches with increasing frustration.
  • ✗Hand the guest a printed map and hope they can identify what they need from a list of nearby services in a language they cannot read.

Handling the same request with Mingle

  • ✓Open a bookmarked Mingle session on the desk tablet, already set to one of the hotel's common language pairs, and turn the screen toward the guest in seconds.
  • ✓For a real back-and-forth, the agent taps Share session and the guest scans the QR code: the guest follows on their own phone in their language, and both speak freely. Without a guest phone, the guest speaks first on the tablet, and the agent swaps the languages from the session menu to answer.
  • ✓With the desk signed in to a Mingle account, the session is saved to its history, so the agent can copy the key points into the booking note for morning handover.

Setting up Mingle at the front desk

  1. 1

Mount Mingle on the desk tablet

This is a one-time job. Sign the desk tablet in to the hotel's Mingle account, then bookmark a session link for each of your four or five most common guest languages, starting with the guest's language because guests usually speak first (for example mingle.fit/session?from=ar&to=en), and add them to the home screen. Each opens a session with that pair already set.

  2. 2

    Select the language pair

At the start of a shift, check the tablet is charged, signed in and has microphone permission. When a guest approaches, open the bookmark for their language. If you do not know it, auto-detect will translate whatever they say into English, but to answer you have to pick their language yourself, because swapping needs a named language. The guest does not need to touch the device.

  3. 3

Hand-face the screen and speak normally

Angle the tablet so the guest can see the session is active and let them speak. To answer, open the language menu, tap swap and confirm: this starts a new session in the other direction and clears the screen, so note anything important first. Tap the mic and speak; the guest reads the captions or hears the translation read aloud through the tablet speaker. Swap again for their next reply. If the agent connects an earbud to the tablet, all read-aloud goes to the earbud, so the guest then reads the screen.

What hotel teams ask before rolling it out

"What if a guest does not trust a translation app with sensitive information like health or payment details?"

Sharing the session to the guest's own phone keeps what they read in their hand rather than on a desk screen. Mingle encrypts sessions in transit and does not keep the audio. If the desk is signed in, the text of the conversation is saved to the hotel's account history, which is useful for handover but worth telling a cautious guest. For card numbers and similar details, have the guest type them into your own system rather than say them aloud.

"Our front desk is loud: will the microphone pick up correctly?"

Background noise is the most common cause of missed words. Keep the tablet within arm's length of whoever is speaking, face its microphone toward them, and move away from music or a busy entrance where you can. Check a room number or date by reading it back. Test at your own desk at a busy time before relying on it.

よくある質問

How many language pairs can we configure for the front desk tablet?

Any pair of Mingle's 60+ languages. There is no special configuration: bookmark a session link for each common pair and add the bookmarks to the tablet's home screen, so staff open the right language with one tap.

Can the night agent use Mingle without any training?

Very little is needed: open the bookmark for the guest's language, listen, then swap the languages to answer. A short walkthrough covering those steps, reading important details back, and what to do if the microphone stops is enough for most agents.

Does the guest need to download anything on their phone?

No. If the guest has a phone, the agent taps Share session and the guest scans the QR code: it opens in their browser, they pick their language and join, with no app and no account. Without a phone, everything runs on the desk tablet and the guest reads the screen or listens to the tablet speaker.

Is there a record of what was discussed that we can include in the booking notes?

Yes, if the desk is signed in: sessions are saved to the account's history, one entry per direction, where the text can be viewed or downloaded. Mingle does not connect to your property management system, so copy the relevant details across into the booking note.

Mingleは無料で試せますか?

はい。カード登録不要で、ゲストセッションをすぐに始められます。有料プランでは、より長いセッション、履歴の保存、チーム向け機能が利用できます。
