What changed since this page was first written
An earlier version of this page described Google Translate's conversation mode as a tap-to-talk walkie-talkie with no private audio. That is out of date. Google's current Android help describes a microphone that detects when one language stops and the other starts, translations read aloud through the phone speaker or headphones, a face-to-face view that splits the screen between two languages, and a listening mode for headphones. You still tap to pause and resume, but you no longer tap for every turn. Features and rollout differ between Android, iPhone and regions, so check Google's page for your device.
Where Google is the better choice
For a quick exchange on an Android phone that already has the app, Google Translate is free, needs no account, and now handles turn-taking and read-aloud well. If you only need translation now and then, it is hard to justify paying for anything else, and we would not tell you to. Google also offers some offline support, depending on the device and the language pair, which Mingle does not: Mingle needs a connection.
Where Mingle is the better choice
Mingle earns its place in two situations. The first is when you cannot count on the app: a guest's iPhone, a shared tablet at a front desk, a phone you have just been handed. Mingle is a web page, so there is nothing to install, and nothing to set up beyond picking two languages. The second is calls. Google Translate's conversation mode is built for two people around one phone; Mingle Meet is a meeting room you share by link, where every participant reads live captions and hears translated speech in the language they chose, so a call across three or four languages works without one shared caption language.
What we have not measured
We have not run an independent side-by-side test of accuracy or delay between Mingle and Google Translate, so this page does not claim either translates better. Results depend on the language pair, accents, the microphone and background noise. Try both on the pair you need, in the place you will use it.
