Live Translation for Travel: Any Language, Any Phone

    Before you leave, open a session for your destination's language and bookmark it — the link keeps the pair, for example mingle.fit/session?from=en&to=ja. Add the bookmark to your home screen so it is one tap away on the street. You will need mobile data or Wi-Fi when you use it.

    Decide how each side will hear it

    A phone plays audio through one output at a time. With an earbud in, you hear the translations privately, but so does your side of the conversation, so the other person reads your words on your screen. Without earbuds, each translation is read aloud through the phone speaker. Turn the screen toward them either way. Each swap between you and the other person starts a new session, and a guest without an account uses one of their free sessions each time.

    For longer conversations, share the session to their phone

    Sign in with a free account, tap Share session and let them scan the QR code. They pick their language on their own phone, and you both speak freely, so over a long meal or a detailed negotiation nobody is swapping languages or leaning over one screen. They need no app and no account.

What travellers ask before relying on it

"What if there is no data connection in a rural area or underground market?"

Mingle needs a data connection; there is no offline mode. Before a trip into areas with no signal, save a few key phrases in your notes app, or download an offline pack in an app that offers one. In cities, markets and restaurants with mobile data, Mingle works as normal.

"Will people be offended that I am using a translation app rather than trying to speak their language?"

Most people are glad to have a conversation that works, and showing them the screen makes clear what you are doing. Learning a greeting and a thank-you in their language, and using Mingle for the rest, tends to go down well.

Does Mingle work for less common languages like Burmese, Amharic, or Mongolian?

Not those three: Burmese, Amharic and Mongolian are not currently supported. Mingle covers 60+ languages, including Swahili, but not every language, so check the language list before your trip. Less widely spoken languages may also be translated less accurately than the major ones.

Can I use Mingle to order food without speaking?

Mingle is built for spoken conversation and does not have a typing mode, so you do need to speak, though quietly is fine if you hold the phone close. For silent ordering, a text translation app is the better tool.

What if the local person does not have a smartphone?

Then use your phone for both of you: you share one phone. When you speak, they read your words on the screen or hear them read aloud; when they answer, you swap the languages so their words are translated for you. Nobody else needs a phone, an app or an account.

Is there a battery impact from running Mingle while exploring?

Mingle only processes audio actively during a session. When you are not in a session, it draws no more battery than a closed browser tab. Starting a session when you need it and closing it when you do not keeps battery usage minimal.
