Buenos días

Bonjour

¿Cuánto cuesta?

Combien ça coûte ?

¿Dónde está la farmacia?

Où est la pharmacie ?

読み上げ

Spanish and French are close enough that you can often guess a written sign, and far enough apart that a spoken answer at a counter can slip straight past you. A pharmacy near the Gare de Lyon, a landlord in Montréal and a commune office in Brussels all expect you to answer quickly, and they all run on details: a symptom, a rent, a surname, a time. Mingle listens to the Spanish you speak and gives the other person French captions and a natural French voice at the same time, so they hear a full sentence rather than the few French words you remember from school.

実際の会話にぴったり

Each session runs one way, from Spanish into French. When the other person replies, open the language menu and tap swap. That ends the current session, clears the captions and opens a new one from French into Spanish; tap the mic again and their answer appears in Spanish on the screen. Read-aloud is optional, and through earbuds you can hear the reply privately while they wait. Nothing is installed on either side: it runs in the browser of a phone or a laptop, and a guest session needs no account and no card.

  • A pharmacy counter in Paris

You flew in from Madrid with a blocked nose and a sore throat. Describe the symptoms in Spanish and the pharmacist reads French captions and hears a natural voice. In Spain you might say "estoy constipado", but a French constipé means something else entirely, so check that the caption talks about a cold (un rhume) before the pharmacist reaches for the shelf. For the dosage and the price, tap swap in the language menu, tap the mic, and read the French answer in Spanish.

  • Signing an apartment lease in Montréal

A Mexican engineer starting a job in Québec asks the landlord about the rent, the heating and the move-in date. The landlord answers in French, so the session is swapped to French-to-Spanish and the reply arrives as Spanish captions. Prices in Québec are written 1 250,50 $, with the dollar sign after the number and a comma for cents, so read the figure twice before signing anything.

  • Registering at a commune office in Brussels

An Argentine master's student enrolling in Belgium gives her nom and prénom at the counter. She explains in Spanish that she has two surnames and which one comes first, and the agent sees it in French on the shared screen. When the agent gives the appointment time and the fee, Belgian French may say septante or nonante, so she swaps the session and reads the numbers in Spanish.

French makes you choose how formal to be, much as Spanish does. Usted maps naturally onto vous, the form France uses with strangers, older people and anyone behind an official desk, while tú maps onto tu. The difference is that ustedes, and the vosotros used in Spain, also become vous, because French uses one word for the plural. Mingle has no formality setting, so the French register follows the way you phrase your Spanish; if you speak to a clerk as usted, expect vous on the screen. In Québec, people switch to tu sooner than in France.

Spoken French hides a lot of what the spelling shows. Many final letters are never pronounced, so parle and parlent sound the same, and liaison carries a silent consonant over to the next word when that word starts with a vowel: les amis is heard as "lay-zah-MEE". Street names, surnames and email addresses heard in a phrase can sound quite different from how they are spelled. Ask for a repeat, or swap the session and read the French answer in Spanish captions.

Numbers deserve the most care. In France and Québec, seventy is soixante-dix and ninety is quatre-vingt-dix; in Belgium and Switzerland they are septante and nonante, and the Swiss may also say huitante for eighty. French writes a decimal comma and leaves a space between thousands, the same grouping Spain now uses but the opposite of Mexico's 1,250.50. In Québec, the dollar sign follows the amount, as in 25,50 $. Times use the 24-hour clock, written 14 h 30, and dates run day, month, year.

Names need a second look too. French forms ask for NOM, often typed in capitals, and Prénom. On a French form your two surnames may be split, hyphenated or cut down to one: since 2005 French parents can pass on both of their surnames, but at most two, hyphenated. Say clearly which surname comes first, spell it out, and check the caption before it goes on a lease or a residence file.

よくあるご質問

スペイン語からフランス語への翻訳について知っておきたいことをまとめました。

Will the French say tu or vous to the person I'm talking to?

There is no formality switch: the translation follows how you phrase things. Speaking to a pharmacist or an official as usted generally lines up with the French vous, which France expects with strangers and at any administrative counter. Tú lines up with tu. In Québec, tu is used more readily than in France, so don't be surprised to hear it back. Read the caption if the tone matters.

Spanish and French look alike. Is that a problem?

Sometimes, because of false friends. Spanish largo means long while French large means wide; Spanish salir is to go out while French salir is to make something dirty; embarazada is enceinte, never embarrassée. Mingle translates meaning rather than look-alike words, but these are the places where a slip is costly, so glance at the French caption when you use one of them.

Why are French prices and times so hard to catch by ear?

Ninety-seven in France is quatre-vingt-dix-sept, literally four twenties, ten and seven. Belgium and Switzerland say nonante-sept instead. Prices use a decimal comma and a space between thousands, and times are given on the 24-hour clock, like 17 h 45. Swap the session to French-to-Spanish and the number reaches you in Spanish captions, which is easier to check than a fast spoken figure.

Does it handle French from Québec, Belgium and Switzerland?

Mingle has one French setting and one Spanish setting, with no regional variant to choose. Speakers from Montréal, Brussels, Geneva and Paris all go through the same French. Accuracy by region has not been measured, so read the captions for anything you will act on, and ask for a repeat if a name or a number looks off.

Can I use it on a trip without an account or a SIM card?

You need an internet connection, either mobile data or Wi-Fi, but no account and no card. Open mingle.fit in the browser, allow the microphone and start a guest session. Signing in adds saved history, handy for an address or an appointment time you want to find again later.
